A beginner’s guide to pairing beer with food
November 9, 2018
Beer pairing dinners are great. The head brewer or chef picks out a beer and designs a course to go along with it. Somehow they always seem to get it just right. They knew exactly how the flavors would play off each other and each sip and bite seem to blend together in perfect harmony on your tongue.
But what about when you want to do it yourself? What happens when there is a special dish you want to make or a new brew that just came out, and no amount of googling will tell you what *exactly* will match it?
Well, then you’ll have to figure it out yourself. But don’t let that scare you. Follow these steps and you’ll be pairing food and beer like an expert in no time.
Break it down
It doesn’t really matter if you start with the food or the beer. If you want to find the perfect beer to pair with your sister’s favorite recipe, start with the food. If your favorite farm brewery (wink, wink) just released a new beer that you’re dying to get your hands on, start with the beer.
The key is to pay attention to the flavors. If you’re starting with the food ask yourself what the major flavors are - is it a savory meat-based dish, a light, sweet dessert, or a salty, fatty appetizer? Deconstruct the meal in terms of sweet, salty, spicy, umami, and bitter. Take into account any spices that the flavors might hint at or ones that will come through. For example, lemon or orange might add a bright acidic note to the dish that could cut through a rich flavor.
Break down the flavors in a beer the same way. Sip the beer, and then try to describe what you taste. If you’re having trouble, you can always look at the tasting notesof each brew online. Is the beer more hop-forward or malt-forward? Are there coffee and caramel notes or do you taste citrus and pine?
Strike a balance
If you’ve ever read over a menu and thought to yourself “that sounds good,” then you’ll be able to do this next step. Think of what sounds good together. Take our Chocolate Raspberry Stoutfor example. It sounds like dessert. So why not try pairing it with something sweet like a raspberry tartlet or a devil’s food cupcake? Or maybe a salty and sweet combination sounds better to you, so chocolate covered almonds or pretzels might be a better match.
Keep in mind that big flavors can overpower a lighter, or subtle flavor. So our Space Nugget DIPAmight not be the best choice to eat with tilapia or haddock, but it’ll be delicious with a bold, spicy dish like curry or chicken wings.
If you’re still feeling a little nervous on matching these flavors up yourself, though, the Brewers’ Association has a guideon what styles generally pair nicely with different foods. Use it as a reference now, and soon you’ll be able to make the connections on your own!
Get tasting
One of the best things about visiting our tasting room, is that you can sample the beer before you buy a glass, crowler, or growler. Plus, if you’re not entirely sure which beer you’ll like best, you can get a flight and try a few!
Becoming a beer pairing pro can take a little bit of time and some thoughtful observation, but doing the “research” is half the fun.
